I have a 15 mile round trip commute which takes me through woods, across sand, over a rocky slope and along regular roads. For that kind of commute, I wanted a tire with fairly low rolling resistance that could also provide me with traction and a bit of cushion on the rough terrain. The Big Apple fits the bill perfectly. It's not a great pure road tire, or off-road tire; it's meant to be a compromise, and it is well-suited to that role. I've ridden these for about 3,000 miles so far, and had one rear-wheel flat, caused by a construction screw. Other than that, these have been terrific.
