Shimano RD-M662 SLX 9-Speed Rear Derailleur, GS Review
I replaced an old shimano XT that was beat up and needed replacement. This one works just as well. It does seem to make more noise on descents in rough terrain. I'm also a little leery of the cable routing. It points towards the wheel (instead of away on the old non-shadow style) and is very close to the spokes. You can only have about 30mm of cable past the derailleur or it will be in your spokes. It is very compact (no wider than the quick release axle). Is that going to help at all? Not sure, I already have a couple scrapes from rocks after a few technical rides but maybe the old style would have been worse than scrapes.I do like that the cable routing doesn't have the big loop at the end. This seems like it will ensure prolonged smooth shifting. Only issue there is if you have a spare old (non-shadow) style derailleur, you will have to cut new cable and housing to put the old style on.
I'd recommend as a replacement but if you have a decent one (LX/XT) that is in good working order, don't replace with this style until you need a new one.
