After my Garmin Edge 800 died on me I wanted a better alternative. Garmin's prices are ridiculous, I've struggled with their sloppy firmware, I'm tired of their near monopoly, I didn't like the poor contrast and visibility of the 800, and I've got my cell phone with my always anyway if I really need to check a map. So I bought this thing as a good alternative to the Edge 500/510. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros:
- Reasonably priced
- Includes a magnetic compass and barometer
- Following a gpx track seems to work well, unlike the bugs I've heard of with the Edge 500
- High contrast screen visible in direct sunlight and sunglasses or in shade (unlike my experience with the Edge 800/810/510)
- Can change settings through software, nice display of fields
- Works with Garmin speed/cadence sensor and heart rate monitor
- Haven't got it yet but like the idea of the remote control
- Very fast GPS lock
- Creates .fit files that most websites accept (works with Ride With GPS, Strava, MapMyRide, Endomondo, etc.)
- Buttons have a good feel
- Nice top "notification" bar that includes time of day
- Seem to be responsive developers who are updating the firmware regularly
- Good backlight with option to turn on at night only
- Replaceable battery

Cons:
- Not a big deal but you can tell it's from Germany, a few of the translations are poor or non-existent for a few words
- Can change units to imperial but doesn't work perfectly (commas instead of periods and the track legend in meters/km)
- No autoscroll feature across screens. (I emailed them and they put it on their feature request list)
- Getting turn by turn directions is doable, but a pain (GPSies.com does it but poorly, for every turn in angle not the roads. Also maps.cloudmade.com does it, but maintains no history). I wrote a python script that converts the turn-by-turn tcx file from ridewithgps.com into a gpx file format that gives turn warnings.
- The mount that raises it above the handlebars is a little crummy, I'm getting a lot of rattling noises from it.
- Although it produces .fit files it suddenly stopped working with uploading connect.garmin.com. Not a big deal as I can use other sites like ridewithgps.com
- A couple of the firmware menu options don't make a ton of sense but really once you learn it that's no problem

Overall I'm pleased with the unit and would buy it again faced with the same choice. There are a few areas in which Garmin is king and is better (website support, turn by turn directions, mount) but also a few areas where this is better (magnetic compass, price, firmware support, gpx track following). It's at least good enough if you're tired of the Garmin stranglehold on the market and their ludicrous prices.
