QUICK OVERVIEWThis is a great light for the road or commuter bicyclist, especially when compared to dedicated cycle lights and their prices. The three light settings and zoom combined with the lightweight and brightness make this a versatile light. The mount is not incredibly secure (hence the 4 star rating), but I found a way to solve that issue.
BOTTOM LINE
If you're looking for a cycle light for road/commuting riding you will be hard pressed to find a better light for the price. I highly recommend the light.
LIGHT
The light utilizes a Cree Q5 LED that is stated to have a 240 lumen maximum output (by various internet retailers). I do not have the equipment to measure the light output, but the light is very bright. The light comes with one AAA battery holder, which requires three batteries, and utilizes a contact switch to cycle through the three light settings (high-off-low-off-strobe-off). The zoom/focus is accomplished by sliding the lens mechanism fore and aft on the shaft of the light. You do not need to rotate the lens mechanism to move it and it stays secure at the set focus point. The light also includes a strap, which I removed for cycling. The light casing is a metal alloy and seems well-made. Unlike the other reviewer, my light does not rattle and is very solid - even over rough terrain.
When riding with the bright setting, the light illuminates the road very well (I average about 15-17mph). As noted by the other reviewer, cracks and hazards are easy to spot. The strobe is perfect for dusk/twilight riding or when in traffic. I do not use the low setting much as I can typically outride the light beam. I have used the low setting for slow, casual rides however. The zoom is great for adjusting the light beam to the various riding conditions and is extremely easy to set while riding. Once you ride with a zoom/focus you will wonder why all cycle lights do not have one. Switching between the three settings (high, low, strobe) is also very easy while riding and the switch gives you solid feedback when pressed. Battery life is typical for a light of this size. If you're going to ride for more than 4 hours, bring an extra set.
MOUNT
The plastic mount attaches to the handlebar with a thumb-screw and includes rubber shims to make it secure (more on this later). The light is supposed to be secured in the mount holder by tightening a similar type of thumb-screw. Since the light casing is metal and the mount is plastic, you will probably never be able to tighten the mount holder around the light enough to keep it secure.
Something I always do when mounting accessories (which are typically plastic) to my bike is wrap self fusing silicone tape (you can find it at hardware stores) around the metal that the accessory attaches. This creates a very secure attachment without using a lot of force when tightening the accessory mount. In this case I put a small amount of tape around the handlebar and secured the light mount (with the shims) to the bar. I also wrapped the light casing (where the mount holder comes in contact) with the self fusing silicone tape (one revolution is enough) and tightened the holder thumb-screw. The light is extremely secure in the holder and will/does not fall out - even over very rough terrain. The mount is also extremely secure to the handlebar, but still can be moved to adjust the light vertically if needed. When I leave my bike I remove the light from the holder (which takes a few seconds) and bring it with me.
