Fits up to 22mmCrane Suzu Lever Strike Alloy Bell Review
I own this same bell in Brass on my Tweedy vintage Raleigh Sports and really like it.So when it came time to outfit my road bike with a nice bell I wanted to get another one -but this time in silver to match the color scheme of that bike.
The silver bell part is aluminum alloy instead of brass so it makes a slightly different tone that isn't quite as pretty and rich. The alloy bell is higher-pitched and doesn't ring nearly as long as the brass one does. The brass bell probably will peal for about THREE TIMES as long as the alloy bell. That's why a lot of high-end bells are made of brass rather than aluminum because of the richer, fuller tone that rings on and on for 15-20 seconds instead of about a third of that with the alloy bell. But that is the trade-off for lighter weight and a nice pretty silver color. I suppose the bell could be made out of a silver alloy for a richer tone but that would cost a LOT of money. Real silver ain't cheap. TANSTAAFL
I suppose that the higher-pitched ring doesn't travel as far as the brass bell as lower-frequency sounds tend to propagate better over long distances than higher tones. But it isn't a big deal for use on a bicycle. I ring my bell about 10 seconds before I come up on peds on a path and then again a bit closer. The peds usually get it and realize I'm passing them. I've not had any serious issues of peds shambling into my path with this bell or any other bell using this technique.
This alloy bell still sounds much better than any plastic-junk bell made by other companies. The Crane bell (and other bells made by crane and re-branded for other companies like Origin-8 and NYC bell) is the best on the market. I'm sure there probably are some custom bell-makers out there selling a superior hand-made bicycle bell but not on the mass market and certainly nowhere near this price.
Just be aware that the silver alloy bell isn't nearly as rich and mellow-sounding as the brass version, nor will the peal go on for nearly as long. That's the trade-off. If you don't care about a couple more grams of weight (it isn't much) and the brass color works with your aesthetic color scheme on your bike I would recommend going with the brass bell because it just sounds better. But this Alloy bell still sounds pretty nice. Just be aware there is a difference and you have a choice.
Choose wisely.
This bell is still deserving of 5-stars as is the brass version. They are for slightly different purposes and if you want lightness and a silver color you are going to have to put up with a slightly-less pretty and long-ringing tone. It's still nice and long -just not the "going on and on and on forever almost" long-ringing peal of the brass version.
