I have a 20 mile, one-way, ride and noticed a major improvement in reduced rolling resistance and max speed. Not only are these lighter than the Serfas I've been using for years (although they're good for half as much $$), but they roll easier, don't need a liner to prevent flats, but they also have a reflective strip to make me more visible in traffic. The tread (what little there is) is great for pavement and rails-to-trails, ok for hard-packed dry dirt trails, but totally useless in wet and muddy dirt trails. Every tire is a trade-off (great on roads OR trails, never both), but if you're commuting around town and only on flat grass and dirt for shot cuts, this is great. If you need more side knobs on slightly more technical paths, look at a few other Marathon models (ie Hurricane HS or Marathon Plus).
This tire will take more pressure than many 2.0" tires. This means you'll get more speed and less chance of a pinch-flat if you hit a pot hole but can add a bit of stiffness to the ride. I love these so much on my commuter I'm getting another set for my single speed.
Update: I've been using these tires on 2 bikes for over a year now & I've only gotten one flat while riding over 2k miles on one set. The treads are showing wear, but probably have another 1500-2k left on them. I get plenty of speed on pavement & never feel like I might lose traction (even in rain). I upped my ratings an extra star & will definitely buy more of these as needed. For commuting it's only these & my Marathon Winter tires when it snows & freezes from now on.
