I was fed up with the Shimano Altus canti brakes that came with my mid-90s Mercian touring bike (a single nut expected to do too much - secure the damnable rodded shoe after deciding on the up and down, in and out and toe-in positioning: fiddly, fiddly!) - but was a long time doing something about it Then recently I discovered the just-issued Shimano BR-CX50. Clearances with my fork and tyre in front seem to be tight, so brake shoes fitted with other cantis (Tektro et al) tended to foul the top of the fork. The beauty of the CX50 is that the brake shoe mounting flange faces forwards (I'm talking about the front brake now) thereby moving the shoes away from the frame. This makes things far less cluttered and there is space around everything, so that in its cross/MTB application there is certainly, I would think, less chance of a wodge of mud forming. There is great stopping power too. the rims get really grabbed, as in a vice, and you can stop as dead as you want. Nice, light, positive feel too, with no squashiness. Replacement rubber pads can be easily fitted too, I'm told, but I gather they're a bit pricey so check. The spring-loaded adjusters work well, also. Altogether, the CX50 is a classy canti brake, and certainly were the answer to my problem. Mick.
