Banjo Brothers Canvas Barrel Bag Review

I was a little dubious about this bag reading the other reviews but now that I have it on the bike I really LIKE it.

Perhaps the bag has been improved since some of the reviews have been written.

Pros:

*Nice heavy black canvas bag is tough and stitched very well.

*Real leather straps and accents are THICK and strong. I'm very impressed with the quality of the leather.

*The leather comes undyed and un-treated so you can dye it to match your Brooks seat, cork grips, or whatever you want it to match. Leather dyes come in all colors and you could almost dye it purple or orange if you had the right dye. There is no need to strip off the protective coating. This is raw tanned leather. It's almost bone-white the way it comes.

*The straps are strong and the buckles very sturdy and well made. You have choices as to how this is mounted as the straps can go in different slots depending on how wide your seat is. There area couple different bungie straps on the bottom to accomodate different ways to tie the bottom off so it doesn't swing. Use your imagination and make it work with how your bike is set up. One set of bungies even has reflective fabric pulls for added visibility. These pulls might work to strap down to a rack or something like that.

*The plastic inner liner keeps the barrel round and doesn't let the fabric fold or bunch. It's well designed with a leather-looking wooden rod inside the bag to keep the shape on the top so it doesn't sag (the buckle straps go around this inside the bag -this can't be seen in the picture.)

*The bag is just big enough to hold a few tools and a small pump and patch kit and maybe some gloves and a plastic bag for your brooks. I'm actually keeping my big massive coiled cable in it that I use to lock up my wheels as my frame is locked with a U-lock.)

*Snap fastener to the back opening seems to stay put and doesn't pop open by itself. It is pretty well designed and easy to use. This is an age-old design used by army bags and old British bicycle bags. It works.

*Great price. Bags like this usually run twice as much and they rarely have such nice leather straps or natural cotton canvas fabric. Cheesy plastic junk for twice the price is the norm.

Cons:

*The bag might be a bit small for some people. It's really just for a few tools or small stuff you keep on the bike all the time.

*The leather comes totally white and undyed or sealed. I think this is a feature because it isn't hard to rub a little proofide or leather protector onto it to darken it up. You could add some dye and make it custom color but you should do SOMETHING because if you don't it'll probably just get yucky with greasy fingerprints that darkens the leather unevenly. If doing a little extra work is a hardship for you then this might be a con.

See my attached customer image up at the top of the page for how it looks on my bike.

I'll come back and revisit this review after putting a bunch of miles on it but I'm pretty confident this bag is going to hold up -I can tell it's better than any other bag I own other than my Brooks Mossbrook bag which is unobtanium these days. I'm very impressed with this Banjo Brother's bag and if/when I need a larger saddlebag I'll look at their options first!
