I have had this bike about 8 weeks and I have ridden it about 4 miles at least 4 days a week, so let's say that it has 128 miles on it.I was attracted to this particular bike because I am over 50 and hadn't ridden a bike in about 25 years, and, it seemed sturdy and safe, and because the lowered top tube made getting on & off the bike easier (figuring that if I spilled I had a chance to jump to the side rather than going over the handle bars). While I am "overweight" I am not "obese", and, I am well within the weight limit for the seat and the bike.
Also, I am riding it in an urban setting, mixed industrial, commercial and residential. Includes street pavement, parking lot and sidewalk, flat to 35-degree plus angle hills within a 4.5 mile course.
For the most part I have been very happy with the bike.
I would give 5 stars to the:
1. LIGHT-WEIGHT ALUMINUM ALLOY ANTI-RUST FRAME
2. ALUMINUM ALLOY ANTI-RUST HANDLE BAR
3. ALUMINUM ALLOY ANTI-RUST STEM
4. ALUMINUM ALLOY ANTI-RUST SEAT POST
5. 26" ALUMINUM ALLOY RIMS
6. ALUMINUM ALLOY STEM
7. 36 STAINLESS STEEL SPOKES
8. FRONT & REAR FENDERS (no splash up)
9. TIRES!!!
The bike is very well constructed and handles well going from sidewalk to street and down curbs well without wobbling or making me feel like I am losing control of the bike. The tires hold air really well.
While I really *wanted* to like the EXTRA-PADDED / SOLID COLOR VINYL LEATHER SADDLE, it is cheaply made and one of two rear screws came out of the plastic housing and the bolt came off of the screw in the front (after 8 weeks).
This possibly happened as a result of going off a curb or as a result of my trying to ride the bike up a hill... (picture pulling hard on the handle bars and pushing hard on the pedals... and sweating like a pig)
Which brings me to the next two things:
I would give the SHIMANO NEXUS INTERNAL 3-SPEED DERAILLEUR and the SHIMANO COASTER (PEDAL) BRAKE 3.5 stars because the description implies that they work on hills.
The SHIMANO NEXUS INTERNAL 3-SPEED DERAILLEUR, which is supposed to help with hills, really doesn't. If you have hills, you might want to consider the 7-SPEED.
Additionally, several things happen when I am riding the bike. I can start from a flat position and change the gears (1-2-3) just fine. But, if I have to leave the sidewalk and go down a curb or have to walk the bike partially up a hill, the gears get all wonky. The derailleur gets really tight and I cannot pedal at all. Short of bouncing the back tire again, it is stuck in this position. I usually then just walk it to the top of the next hill and coast down and it clears. Additionally, the derailleur sometimes changes the gear without prompting.
Since I am using the bike as part of an exercise program, this doesn't really impede my enjoyment, because walking the bike up hill burns more calories and I can coast down and cool off.
The SHIMANO COASTER (PEDAL) BRAKE is a little scary, again, because I am going down hill. I have learned to almost stand on the brake, which means at some point it will fail and I could be in trouble. If I was riding this on a flat surface only, I am sure that it would be fine.
Lastly, I am ambivalent about the CIONLLI ULTRA-SOFT VINYL LEATHER GRIPS. They *seem* like a nice touch, but, I am close to wearing them out because I grip so hard trying to negotiate the hills (both coming and going). Within the first few days, they were what popped to the top of my list of things to replace. While I did purchase the basket, I haven't used it on the bike yet. I have it in my car and use it for light shopping.
I will most likely ultimately keep the frame / handle bars / tires / rims and over time redo the rest of the bike as parts fail. I have gotten a lot of compliments on the vanilla paint job and I am really happy with it. It got me out of the house and while I haven't lost weight, I have lost inches and increased my endurance. I would encourage other women to get this bike. It is a lot of fun, easy to manage and helps with maintaining good posture while riding!
