SunRace 8-Speed 13-32 Freewheel Chrome Review

I used this freewheel to convert my daughter's road bike from a 7-speed to an 8-speed. Her bike, a Fuji Ace 24, came with shifters mounted near the stem, which she didn't like at all. I found a set of Sora brifters on Ebay, and bought this freewheel to go with them. I didn't move any spacers on the hub so clearance to the chainstay is tight, but it shifts well and my daughter likes the bike even more.

The original freewheel on the bike wobbled as it turned, which may have been why I had to keep fiddling with the adjustments. This freewheel runs straighter, and I haven't had to adjust the cable since I installed the brifters, new housing cable, new cable, and this freewheel. She now has about twice as much mileage on this as on the original freewheel, and I appreciate the extra silence that comes with not having a derailleur out of adjustment. My daughter like being able to keep her hands in place while she shifts, and the fact that the gears no longer shift themselves.

I think the weight is higher on this than some other freewheels, but the cost is very reasonable and it functions well. I hope it will last as the bike passes through a few children, but if not, I would buy this freewheel again.

As a side note, be warned that if you perform the same conversion, your neighbors will laugh at the sight of a full grown man taking a 34 cm road bike out for a test ride. Just don't put spandex on before the test ride, and the ridicule should be kept to a minimum.
